A good way to look for things that the author intended to use as symbolism is to look for things that are reffered to over and over in the text. The letter itself is an obvious symbol, representing Hester's past sin. Others are sunlight, darkness, Pearl's reflection in water... find these in the text, and see in which instances they're used.
